The world is lined with different theories; some scientific, some mathematical, and some even occur in every day situations. Social scientists use theories as well. In the field of marriage and family, there is no single theoretical explanations. Yet, four theories are used most commonly. These theories are the systems theory, exchange theory, symbolic interaction theory, and conflict theory. These theories are not only used to explain phenomenon but help in guiding research as well. Systems Theory: The systems theory asserts that a family must be analyzed as a whole. Each family has boundaries that set them apart from other families. This is due to the unspoken rules and roles in each family system. The system would fail without every member fulfilling his or her role. My own family had our different roles and rules growing up.
