Up to "Date"

The topic of dating is one that has evolved over the years. Dating used to be a term describing the act of going on a bunch of dates with different people. Asking many different people out on dates used to be a norm. It was a way to get to know other people while participating in fun activities. There didn’t have to be any attraction between the two people; they were just there to have fun and socialize. Nowadays the word dating implies that two people are in a relationship and only going on dates with each other. The requirements to ask/be asked on a date have changed along with the term dating. As previously stated, a “date” in the olden days was simply a fun way to get to know another person. In present times a date requires that the two individuals to be attracted to each other. People will say no to a date offer only because they are not attracted to the other person. A date is just a date, not a profession of love. I think it is important that we get out of this mindset and...

The Differences Between the Gender's

Men and women are different in many ways. Men tend to be stronger, while women tend to be gentler. These differences appear early on in life. Multiple people have wondered whether these differences cause inequality. They also raise the question of whether they come naturally, or if they were taught in childhood. Gender is an ever increasingly controversial subject. There are constant arguments about equality between men and women.   Many women are active in the movement of feminism. They believe that women are completely equal to men and should be treated as such. Feminism was discussed in a video I watched recently. One portion of the video particularly stood out to me. A video had been made of firefighters in training. It was very obvious that the women struggled much more than the men. Most women couldn’t set tall ladders against the side of a building, climb walls, or chop wood. After the making of this video, some firefighter training was forced to ease up on the strengt...

Family Culture

When most people hear the word “culture”, they automatically think of generalized terms like Indian culture, Mexican culture, or American culture. These ideas of culture do not fully explain the vast applications of the term. Different cultures are found in every city, friend group, and, as is the focus of my blog, family. Every family has its own culture. It is a combination of the family cultures the mother and father came from. My family is centered around The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, so our culture is highly influenced by the teachings in our church. We are constantly striving to become more like our savior Jesus Christ and support each other in that goal. I come from a family of five children, all of us girls. This has had a big impact on our family culture. My father is big into sports, while my mom is a dancer. Thus, my sisters and I did both dance and sports growing up. All us eventually quit dancing but stuck with sports all the way through high schoo...

Family Theories

The world is lined with different theories; some scientific, some mathematical, and some even occur in every day situations. Social scientists use theories as well. In the field of marriage and family, there is no single theoretical explanations. Yet, four theories are used most commonly. These theories are the systems theory, exchange theory, symbolic interaction theory, and conflict theory. These theories are not only used to explain phenomenon but help in guiding research as well.           Systems Theory: The systems theory asserts that a family must be analyzed as a whole. Each family has boundaries that set them apart from other families. This is due to the unspoken rules and roles in each family system. The system would fail without every member fulfilling his or her role. My own family had our different roles and rules growing up. As the youngest child, I took on the role of the annoying little sister. When I wasn’t being obnoxious I was constantl...
